Lee Guetterman

Have you ever made the right choice for the wrong reason?

I did, once. And when I finally got things straightened out, I made...

The most important decision of my life.

My dad is a pastor, and when I was growing up, I heard him preach on the subject of hell, and it really scared me. Since I didn't want to go to hell, I said, "yes, I'll believe in Jesus Christ." That way I could go to heaven.

As I grew older I began to have doubts. "Did God really save me from going to hell?" When I got to high school I felt like I needed to publicly confess my belief in Christ all over again. But I dared not go down another church aisle. After all, what would my friends think?

These doubts went on inside me for six more years. Finally, when I was a college sophomore, I realized I had made the right decision, but for the wrong reason.

I saw that keeping me from hell wasn't the only reason Jesus came to earth. When Jesus died on the cross all the sin -- all the wrong things I had ever done or would ever do -- died with Him. If I shared Christ's death, then I also shared His resurrection. I could know Him personally both here on this earth, and forever in heaven.

Having a personal relationship with God. This was the reason -- the right reason -- I said "yes" to Christ as a sophomore in college.

Ever since that day my life has been different.

Christ has given me peace. Before that time, I had no peace. It was like being in a dark tunnel with no exit, no light.

All of a sudden, I realized I had a light to guide me, Jesus Christ. And He could lead me through any situation, including baseball.

Christ has given me a new desire. Today, as a Christian, I try to do the best I can. If I face a hitter with the bases loaded, I'm going to give 100 percent. Then, regardless of the outcome I can walk off the mound and feel satisfied that I've given my best effort.

My life is not perfect. I have weaknesses that I'm still working on. But I know that God forgives me when I fail, and the fact that He loves me keeps me going.

Tonight, before you go to bed, I'd like you to think about what you've read, here. Look inside yourself. Do you feel a void in your life? Maybe, like me, God is calling you to accept Him for the right reason.
