Hubert Davis
In 30 minutes the Dallas Mavericks will strut out on to home court, lean and mean and gunning for another win. But where's their star three-point shooter, 6-5 guard Hubert Davis? He's in the bathroom.
But he's not doing what you might suspect he's praying. His teammates think it's funny. "What are you doing, praying for 30 points?" they ask. But Hubert's not ashamed. He's determined to use tonight's game to glorify the one he plays for: Jesus Christ. That's pretty good for a guy who used to hate God.
Rewind back to Hubert's high school days. "I was a nerd," he admits. Other kids were going to football games and hangin' out. I was watching basketball films and going to the gym."
Every game he played he was proud to look up in the stands and see his mom. Even when he missed a shot or turned the ball over, he looked at his mom and she would give him the biggest smile.
One day something went wrong. Hubert's mom was diagnosed with cancer and that summer there was nothing he could do but watch her die. "I worked even harder in the gym because I was frustrated. Basketball kept my mind off my mom's illness he recalls. When it was all over there was an empty place in Hubert's heart. "I hated God for taking her. It just didn't seem fair that she had to go so early."
He used basketball to numb the pain. And his hard work paid off. He earned a scholarship to North Carolina to play with the Tar Heels. But his frustration with life started to show.
Finally his friends suggested going to church and he went. "I wanted to find out why God took my mom," he says. "I thought the pastor was going to read a verse in the Bible that said why she died."
It didn't happen. Yet the longer Hubert looked, the more he began to see the truth. "I realized how much God loved me and how much He had sacrificed so I could have a relationship with Him," he says.
That year Hubert decided to let go of his anger and start believing in the immense love God had to offer. "I'll always miss my mom. But I do trust in God, and I know everything happens for a good reason. I know one day I'll see her again."
Hubert hit the NBA two years later playing first with the Knocks, then the Raptors and now with the Mavs where he leads the league in three-point filed-goal percentage. In 2000, he participated in the AT&T shootout during the all-star weekend and he continues to play the best ball of his life.
Back to the bathroom. What is Hubert praying about in there? "I'm just telling God that I love Him and I know He's put me here for a reason," he says. "I want to make sure I take advantage of the opportunity I have to represent Him."
