Im too blessed to be stressed.
Its my response to the question, How are you? And its the truth. I have been blessed.
But life certainly hasnt been easy. In fact, my wife and I have been through the greatest tragedy any parents can experience. Our daughter, Lisa, was injured in an automobile accident after a high school football game, and, after a week in a coma, she died.
Through the entire week Lisa was in a coma, the kids kept streaming through the hospital, offering an abundance of love and support. God touched us and covered us and anointed us to minister to so many people because of Lisa, and many came to know Jesus as their Lord through Lisas life. Even the driver of the car in which Lisa had been injured came to Christ that week. God gave us His strength, and we relied upon Him.
I had not always, however, been able to rely so completely upon God. Actually, it wasnt until I went to a Fellowship of Christian Athletes event that I heard the Gospel the message of Gods love for me in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Im sure the Gospel had been shared with me before, but I didnt have the spiritual ears to hear it.
After I asked Jesus to be the Lord of my life, I developed a hunger for Gods Word. In 1980, I read through the New Testaments, Psalms and Proverbs every month. God used that time in His Word to prepare me for the ministry I was about to enter.
In November of 1980, I told God I would be available to minister to coaches, teams and athletes. That was the birthing of Beyond Victory Ministry. Just two days later, one of the Portland Trail Blazers asked me to lead a Bible study for the Blazers, and two days after that, one of the collegiate athletes at Portland State University also asked be to lead a Bible study. I discovered that when you say Yes to God, He opens the doors.
There has been great sorrow in my life, but also great blessing. Ive been so wonderfully blessed in my marriage with Andy, and my two remaining children both came to the Lord through the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. God allows me to touch people with His love and grace, and thats the greatest blessing of all.
I am, absolutely, too blessed to be stressed.
