Popularity and success came easily through sports and academics while in high school and college. A four-year starter at Arizona from 1991-95, I was part of a defensive powerhouse. I was certain the NFL was the next step.
Draft day was the worst day if my life. Despite all my accomplishments, I was not drafted. Feeling rejected, I drove to Tampa Bay to try out as a free agent. I stopped in New Orleans, my hometown, and attended church. While there, I gave my life to Christ and began a personal relationship with God.
There have still been disappointments. I was cut the last day of tryouts with Tampa Bay. I had to return to graduate school and give my dreams pf playing in the NFL to the Lord. He responded by having the Buccaneers call again. I made the team. When I reflect on what God has done in my life, a verse in Proverbs reminds me that "humility comes before honor." He has blessed me greatly.
