I remember the time in my life when I thought I had everything. After playing college football at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas and being and all-conference defensive back, I was drafted in 1983 by the Los Angeles Express of the USFL.
The material wealth and personal pleasure that came with a pro football career seemed great at first. I had a nice car and nice clothing, and I found myself around a lot of pretty women.
In spite of all these things, I still had a big void on the inside. All the things the world had to offer left me empty and wanting something more. I found myself searching for the answers to lasting joy and contentment.
One day I made a phone call to my mother. As one who really loved God, read the Bible and prayed daily, she prayed for me and encouraged me to read some scriptures.
When I finished reading them, I realized that I could find the meaning of life and a purpose for living by asking Jesus Christ to come into my heart where He could guide and direct my life.
On that day in May of 1983, I opened my life to the Lord and He came in. He changed the way I think and the way I live, and He also changed the way I play football.
I no longer play football for personal fame and glory. I play in a way that brings honor to God, and that means giving 100 percent and conducting myself in a sportsmanlike manner.
Playing in the USFL and NFL not only allowed me to come to know Jesus Christ in a personal way, but I've also made many good friends who have helped me grow in my relationship with the Lord.
I'd like to ask you some questions. Are you experiencing real joy, peace and lasting contentment? Do you have meaning and purpose in life? Do you know for sure that you'll spend eternity in heaven when you die or when the Lord returns?
If not, I pray that you'll ask Jesus Christ to come into your life today. No matter where you're at in life, Jesus cares for you and wants you to experience success in the game of life. Whether you've had a troubled past or think you're the nicest person on earth, turning over your life to the Lord is the most important decision you'll ever make.
I grew up in North Miami Beach, and I was a good guy and tried to stay out of trouble. I realized that being a nice person isn't enough to get me into heaven. The Bible says that there's only one way to heaven, and that's through a relationship with Jesus Christ. "I am the way, the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6) "Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we may be saved." (Acts 4:12)
