"Have you ever had a person tell you something you didn't want to hear, and later you realized, 'He's right?" This happened to me once, and the event changed my life so radically, that I'd like too tell you the whole story...
It took place while I was in college...
I had come home on weekend to visit my family. Outwardly, things were going well for me. I was playing football for Notre Dame. I was confident in my abilities. I thought I had everything I needed in my life.
Over the weekend I got into a discussion with my 15 year-old brother, Rob. I'll never forget what he said to me. "Ken I've got something to share with you: God loves you and has a plan for your life."
How do you respond to something like that? My first reaction was to reject Rob. I didn't want to hear my little brother, who was four years younger than I am, tell me what he thought I needed. I had gone to church before, and I believed in Jesus, but I sure didn't know anything about having a personal relationship with God.
I might have forgotten about the whole incident except that when I returned to school, I met others, including some of my own teammates, who told me the same thing--that I could know God and discover the unique plan He had for my life.
My brother had challenged me to read the gospel of John. So I did. And as I started to look at Jesus, what He said and how He lived, I realized there was something missing from my life. I was searching. I didn't know what I needed. I just knew I didn't have peace in my life. Rob had kept telling me I could know this peace--by knowing God.
I kept searching and then...
Finally, after several months, I came to a decision. I wasn't totally sure of all the issues, but I finally said to God, "I want the peace I see in Rob and others. I want You to come into my life and take control."
God did exactly that. As I put my faith in Him, I began to see that God actually did have a plan for my life. I learned to trust Him no matter what the circumstances.
Going into the NFL draft, I was rated as one of the top five college quarterbacks in the country. Draft day came, 30 guys were drafted, and I wasn't one of them. At the time, I was going out with a girl named Pauline who saw how I responded to the situation. She said, "There's something special about your Jesus. If you're able to bounce back from a disappointment like the one you've gone through, I need to have that same relationship with Jesus." Ten months later she became my wife.
Being a Christian doesn't mean all of my problems have disappeared. Like anyone, I face difficulties. However, I am learning to trust God even in my low times. And as I do, I continue to discover a great truth from God's Word, the Bible, when Jesus says: "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness."
