Grant Williams Knocking At The Door As a kid, I was what you'd call a total sports fan. My dad was a coach, and baseball was my first love. After junior college, an injury kept me from playing on the diamond, but I never dreamt of giving up on sports. So, I decided to put all my energies into football. And it wasn't easy. In high school, the football coach got on me for being, what he thought was lazy. In college, I tried out twice for one university, but didn't make the team. Their coach said, "We don't think you can play." But I kept at it, and enrolled at Louisiana Tech where I became Team Captain my senior year and was named Best Offensive Lineman of the Year. And in July 1996, I signed as a free agent with the Seattle Seahawks. Too Much To Handle My parents are Christians, so growing up I accepted what they believed. But, I never really made it personal, and I didn't always involve God in my life. When I signed as a free agent, some coaches and universities were still saying, "You'll never make it." I took that very personally. I wanted to believe in myself, but it's tough when people around you are tearing you down. The pressure during training camp and the season was too intense, and I had to release it. So, I decided to take this one to God. The Door Opened I always thought God was somebody you learned about. But I realized He is somebody you get to know. He wanted our relationship to be a personal one. And when I started to get to know Him, I began to feel like I had a real purpose in life. He has given me my talent, just like He has given you yours. Now the big difference in my life is letting Jesus use my talent to reach out and help others. I set a lot of goals for myself in my life, but the only goal that truly matters is the eternal one: arriving at heaven's door and walking through. When we give God our decisions, our lifestyles, and all that we are, He promises to meet us there.
