I certainly wasn't raised in a born-again, personal-relationship-with-the-Lord type of environment but I definitely was given an awareness that there was a God. My family and I went to church in England, where the church is, unfortunately, part of the state. The Church of England is built on the lines of the Catholic Church, and is very strict and everything is done exactly the same. So as a child, it was very boring and not something to look forward to. It wasn't until much later, when I turned pro, that I realized that you could actually have a personal relationship with the Lord.
I met an American golfer, Meredith Marshall. She's a wonderful lady. I was very young and impressionable when I turned pro, I was just 17 and she basically took me under her wing.
We first met when she came and lived at my parent's house and I traveled with her in England. She had a sponsors card and I didn't have anything but she didn't know her way around England. I drove and directed while she was there and she stayed at the house and ultimately directed me to the Lord. So it really worked out well.
She really let me see that you can have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Before then, Jesus was always some sort of something that happened in history. I was never really told that He is alive and that He can live inside you.
Being on the Tour gives you a platform to reach people, which makes it a little bit easier because people are automatically going to listen to what you have to say. It also means that we're reaching a bigger audience, so if we make a mistake or if we're a little bit insecure, we're going to hit more people with something that they might not want to hear otherwise.
I try and act like I should on the Tour. I try to let my own personality come out, to be a friendly and approachable person. I try to let that come out when speaking to people. When I'm being interviewed, I definitely let the reporter know that I am a Christian. Naturally that has a good side and a bad side to it. The good side is that I'm reaching people, and they might be pleasantly surprised. But it might bring up a negative side, which is, "well, how could she be a Christian and throw that club?" or "I heard her say this!" or "she didn't sign my son's autograph how could she call herself a Christian?"
I believe that once you step pout of the locker room, you have to be totally aware that you are a Christian, that you have a responsibility, that you're an ambassador for Christ. That must be in the forefront of your mind at all times.
