Cleber Americo da Conceicao

"WITHOUT THE LORD THERE WOULD BE NOTHING TO COMMEMORATE"

I come from a non-Christian, poor family. My desire was to improve my life as best I could. I even sought the help of a witch who lived in our compound. But nothing she said came out right for me.

In 1982 I started out practicing with the Atletico Mineiro soccer club. They had a "soccer camp" for kids my age. And because of the testimony of Joao Leite, who was a soccer pro, and who was a serious and respected players, I got an interest in Jesus. The day came when I received Jesus into my life as well.

My soccer skills improved with time. I played in Spain, then I returned to Brazil and played for Palmeiras.

I was not selected to play in the 1994 World Cup in the USA. At the time my team, Palmeiras, played some friendly games in Colombia. While we were playing in that South American country, I got the news that Ricardo Gomes, who was in the main Brazilian team in the World Cup had been injured and the Brazilian officials were considering my name as a replacement. I was eagerly waiting for their decision - I wanted the chance very badly. I grew confident over the issue and I also felt the weight of the responsibility of wearing the famous Brazilian official jersey on the soccer field. Then they called my name. Newspaper reporters alleged that I was nowhere to be found and so another player was called instead.

I was greatly disappointed. I became very sad. That was a terrible time for me. I took everything to God and thanked him for bringing my name to the minds of the officials in our delegation. God knows all things. The Holy Spirit teaches us to always depend on God in every situation. I had to put that lesson into practice.

1996 was a good year for me. My team, Palmeiras, won the Sao Paulo championship that year. I played well and scored beautifully. I received a prize among all the athletes who distinguished themselves in that year. On the day of the award ceremony, all the important people were present. When my turn came to receive an award, the master of ceremonies threw me the ball--asked me to speak a little about my faith. I didn't expect a chance like that. I gave my testimony and I spoke about the love of God for all those who were present there. In 1997, I was finally chosen to play for the Brazilian squad. I played well and my name was on the list of those who were being considered for the coming 1998 World Cup in France.

Through soccer I learned that the glory of victory is empty. Medals and trophies will grow faint and dark with the passing of time. On the other hand, our experiences with God never fade. If it was not for the Lord, there would be no reason to commemorate. I thoroughly enjoy all my victories as a soccer pro. I know they come from God and He can use them for His own glory and honor. But the greatest victory is that which Christ conquered for me in the final game played on the cross. That victory lasts forever.
